This wasn’t what I was expecting at all… I feel like I just sat through vampire marriage counseling. This is heavily swayed to relationships and (mundane) relationship problems. It also has overarching themes of justice; at times it felt like a morality play. It’s not very spooky and I felt like there could have been much more vampire action.

This book is a fantastic account of a young, vulnerable woman coming to terms with the long-term abuse, gaslighting, and manipulation she experienced at the hands of her vampire husband, lover, keeper, and sire. At first enraptured by his otherworldly beauty and grace, Constanza slowly, over centuries, realizes that she is not a beloved bride, but rather a plaything pressed beneath the heavy thumb of a monster who had long since given up his own humanity.

Told entirely as a stream-of-consciousness diary or letter to said vampire lord after his death, Constanza narrates the centuries of her life at her husband's side: his abuses, his manipulations, and the lives of the others he tricked into sharing her undead life, and how she ultimately saved herself form his rule over her afterlife.
