But a girl . . . Nothing to see. It’s not that he’s unhappy, no. There’s just a little something missing from his happiness.

This is philosophical auto-fiction at its finest, written in gorgeous prose and proceeding at a dream-like pace through a life. As someone born and socialized as a girl, I found a lot that resonated with my own experience, which was both validating and depressing. There is hope, though, as the main character’s daughter emerges toward the end, representing a new generation of women, freer, more queer, more confident. This book left me thinking about how far we’ve come and how far we have left to go.
