Fantastic on audio - my favorite way to experience memoir, hearing the author read their own words. Definitely hard to read in places (absolutely heartbreaking childhood) but what an incredible story!

I feel weird rating biographies. This is someone’s life and the story that is being told. But listening to the audiobook which is read by Viola herself was amazing. Everything she endured as a child, and to not resent everyone she encountered during that time that didn’t “save” her is inspiring to me honestly.

Viola’s reading was powerful. Her story is full of trauma but inspiring. The part where she met her husband is sweet and you can hear the hope and joy in her voice. A positive and rich experience.

I’m so happy and grateful that she blessed us with this memoir. I learned so much about her and her journey and really appreciated how she described her process for realizing and cultivating her talent to make a career and how she really spent time learning and cultivating herself to get to the point where she could create a beautiful life for herself. I read it as an audiobook and she narrates it and you can hear and feel the experience simultaneously. It’s amazing. I related to her story so much and am so grateful that she had the courage to write it. Viola Davis is a national treasure.
