Truthfully, I think I liked this series best of the Tortall ones that I've read so far. She was a fun character (and as is pointed out later in the series, the most normal of the lady characters and so is someone that normal girls can hope to aspire to).

I really enjoyed this one. It's unlike a lot of the girl-goes-to-combat-school books out there. She's no Mary Sue, has lots of flaws that she actually has to work to overcome, makes mistakes, isn't the golden child. It's my first Tamora Pierce, and I plan to find the rest of the series.

Mehh...
It's... Okay. Honestly I would have DEVOURED this series 10 years ago. And when rereading it I would probably have given it 5 stars because of the nostalgia goggles. But reading this as an adult its just... okay. It was fun enough though, otherwise I wouldn't continue reading the series. But it is also so similar to the immortals quartet that I keep forgetting Dane is not the main character. It doesn't help that the audiobooks are narrated by the same voice actor, but the voices of the characters, both in dialogue and internal monologues, the actions, and even the (sort of) communicating with animation are sooo similar.
And when a significantly older boy is introduced alarm bells went off. Surelyyyy Pierce would not pull that shit AGAIN. Right... ?
