I think I'm reading this series out of order. I went straight from the Song of the Lionness to this, and there are suddenly magical creatures running around, so I guess I'll be shuffling my reading order around until I can figure out what order these need to be read in.

It's a cute book, about working hard and having to prove yourself, but I'm furious that Alanna went through all that work so many years ago and women are still treated as lesser when it comes to knighthood. Also, it's totally Alanna who is sending Kell the gifts. I'd also bet that by the end, Kell will be talking to her sparrows. At least, I hope she is.

I enjoyed this book, but Anne McCaffery does it better with her Dragonsinger series. This tells the story of a young girl who decides to be the first girl to try and be a page in a hostile training atmosphere. I would recommend this to 4-7th graders. It also kind of reminds me of the Ranger's Apprentice series.

Fast paced, amazing world building, vast cast of characters all relatable and loveable, amazing story telling and beautifully written.

You can easily get lost in this world and can't help but cheer on Kel. No unnecessary story tangents and you can easily tell that Pierce researched Knights, their weapons and their fighting tactics. Story telling at it's absolute best.

It is considered young adult but that should not put you off from this gen of a series. It will thoroughly entertain adults too!
