What an imagination this author has! Although things get a bit repetitive when reading this compilation of stories about Tomie, the femme fatale, one after another, it was still very entertaining.

What makes Tomie a special villain? She can be defeated. But she will not be. There are even instances where she will simply not burn. And it is like reading different alternative universes for one villain.

I pondered about whether I wanted her to be destroyed. In real life, absolutely. But my answer here is no. Somehow, it would lose its charm, the thing that makes Tomie special is that she cannot die. How cheap would it be if she perished?

The idea sounds silly. But the art and performance of Junji Ito are high-class.

Ito's debut manga is a terrifying and somewhat gross bit of work, the art and the story work well together. It's also a bit of a social criticism of Japan's shame culture and gender stereotypes. An interesting read.
