"معارضة الغريب" لكمال داود تعيد كتابة ما جرى في العمل الكلاسيكي "الغريب" للكاتب الفرنسي ألبير كامو. لهذا السبب قراءة كتابات ما بعد الاستعمار مهمة، موسى أيضاً يحمل "اسم" و"أحلام" و"مستقبل" وإن بدا ذلك أقل أهمية عن أحلام بطل الغريب، ولم يكن يوما مجرد رمزية في رحلته للبحث عن معنى، إذ يقول راوي معارضة الغريب

بيد لي أن كمال داود رسم "العبثية" في روايته بصورة أبهى عن تصوير "سارتر" وحتى "كامو" نفسه! عن عبثية الاستعمار الفرنسي للجزائر، وعبثية مقتل "العربي"، وعبثية نظرة المستعمِر للمستعمَر، وعبثية ثنائية الـ "أنا" والـ"آخر"، وعبثية تحول المحاكمة من قضية قتل لتحقيق سبب عدم اكتراث مورسو لوفاة والدته!

je voudrais l'adorer - mais je ne peux pas. c'est une perspective tellement importante sur un livre qui, contennant des idées intéressantes et importantes, est aussi très raciste. j'aime bien 'l'étranger', l'existemtialisme et absurdisme m'ont aidé beaucoup de trouver ma place dans la vie, mais ça n'aide personne de nier que non seulement meursault, mais camus aussi ont une perspective de colonisateur.
mais la façon dont cette contre-enquête est écrite ne me touchait pas trop. la vue questionnable sur les femmes qu'avait meursault n'est pas différent (peut-être c'est l'idée, je ne sais pas). ce n'est même pas ce que l'histoire ne donnait pas une perspective intéressante ou ne m'aiderait pas à mieux comprendre la vue coloniale de l'original. mais c'est un peu partout et nullepart et all over the place. et, parce que j'ai une version annotée de l'étranger mais pas de ce livre-là, je n'ai personne qui m'aide de comprendre les mots difficils et de réfléchir, qui me donne du contexte...

I wanted this book to be good, and occasionally it was. Every four or five pages there was a small passage that practically made my heart stop, but the pointlessly and indulgently dreary filler between those passages made this book almost impossible to finish. It's a huge disappointment because the premise is great. Unfortunately nearly nothing about the execution is worthwhile. The basic plot is unnecessary and somewhat insulting, the prose is repetitive, and constant comparisons of cities to "old whores" is particularly tasteless and boring. Sometimes authors revel in their characters' misogyny as an attempt to make a story "gritty" or "realistic," but it usually falls flat if the reader is even halfway awake. This is a good example.
I want to clarify that I don't think the book was bad because the protagonist was "whiny" "entitled" or "boring." Rather, the author's specific choices of how to explore the protagonist's (and his mother's) trauma were misogynist, boring, and immensely disappointing. The choice to echo the structure & events of "The Stranger" was unnecessary and poorly executed besides. There's a lot to explore about what the concept of "the absurd" even means in a post-colonial context, or what "the absurd" might mean to a family whose son was abruptly murdered and thoroughly erased, but Daoud either doesn't attempt any of this or is very bad at it. The book needed much stronger editing.
