This book is complicated, and my feelings about it are mixed. On one hand, it's undeniably a page-turner. But on the other hand, it frustrated me so much that I honestly can't say I liked it.
This is sad. This is a tragedy. But I found it difficult to sympathize with Dawn. She chose to cheat on her husband, and that decision had devastating consequences for their family especially their daughter. While I understand the complexity of her emotions and the struggles she might be facing, cheating is a choice that causes real harm. It's not something I can easily excuse. At the same time, I also find it hard to see Heron as a villain—he literally did nothing wrong before Dawn's infidelity.
I understand this book wants to highlights the injustice of separating a mother from her child and condemns bigotry, which is important and well done. But I struggled with how the story handles the idea of infidelity. Men or women, queer or not; it is a betrayal, it broke families apart. I feel like this book didn't really acknowledge the harm of it, and tend to push the readers to let it slide—feel sorry for Dawn even. I don't remember there was a scene where Dawn apologized to Heron and Maggie.
One thing that stood out and bothered me sooo much is how this book falls into a harmful queer trope. There's a recurring storyline where closeted queer people come out later in life by cheating or leaving their partners and families, and often ignores the very real pain inflicted on the partners who are left behind. I really don't like it, it's a narrative that portray queer people as selfish and one-sided. Being honest with yourself is important, but it doesn't justify hurting others. I feel like the conflict on this book could be executed better.
I think the biggest takeaway from this book is just as simple as: don't date or marry someone you don't love.

This was a super quick read that explored one family's journey across 40 years. It was beautifully written but I felt so frustrated at times. It also felt like it needed to be longer/go deeper into some of the topics that were addressed. However, it was a heartbreakingly beautiful read about something that I had no prior knowledge of and I thought did a great job bringing awareness to,
