As I began this novel, I was so irritated with the narrator! She antagonizes Natzis for goodness sake! BUT, when the twist was revealed, I couldn't put it down! Yes, this is a bit of a slow burn at the beginning, but the payoff is ultimately so worth it. Hand to readers who are willing to stick with it and enjoy a good spy novel in a historical setting.
A wonderful book that proves one doesn't have to write everything out to say an awful lot. It almost needs two back-to-back readings.
wow one of the best ww2 books i have ever read and the writing style 0-0
its soo freaking sad and beautiful and ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Struggled with this story and characters. It went on a bit too long for no reason...
Below is my original review of this book. My book club had selected a bunch of historical war novels to read back to back to back. When I came to this one, I think I was just a little burnt out on the genre and had a difficult time with the book. My book club ended up not getting to this book before summer break, so with fresh eyes I gave this book another chance, and I'm really glad I did. It's an exceptional story. The manner in which it's written is a little different, and takes a minute to get used to. I'm glad I gave this book another chance. If you find the writing style frustrating (which I did a lot in the beginning), give it time. The story the author weaves together is worth it. It will pull at your heart strings in the end.
My original review: After reading the reviews for this book I was really excited to read it when my book club picked it. I know I am in the minority on this, but I did not enjoy this book. A lot of it has to do with the way the author structured the book, and how it was written. I found it...well....boring and difficult to get through. And maybe my book club chose too many war type books to read back to back and I'm in need of a break from them. I fully admit that could be a big reason why I didn't enjoy it.

Code Name Veritably Remarkable
An incredible and inspiring and effortless read. The historical fiction kept me hooked at every page, and by the end, I was weeping for the story that was and the one that could be. A MUST read.

I do appreciate the writing and acknowledge the work, effort and research that went into this, but I just couldn't get into it. I wanted so bad to love this book, but it just wasn't for me and I usually LOVE WWII historical fiction.
Code Name Verity is written from a unique perspective - notes taken by the book's characters. It isn't a difficult read, but it does take a moment to jump into the perspective. The story is good - you'll want to know how it ends, but this is a book you can put down and pick up again, it isn't a true page turner.
The plot is different than a lot of WWII books and when coupled with the POV it's written in, it creates a unique tale and a strong read.
IMO, it doesn't stand out among other WWII books I've read, but I still think people should give it a read. On a positive note, it is appropriate for a wider age group than other books, allowing young readers to learn about this time period.

You have to drudge through the first 75% for an amazing final 25%.
This one is in the 3-4 star realm. It was a different take on a WWII story which is always interesting (and becoming harder and harder to find). We get to hear the story of Maddie and Julie's friendship from both sides and realize that there were women exactly like these two...risking their lives just like the men. Although a YA book, the writing sometimes seemed too flippant for the circumstances. I know Queenie was trying to keep things light, but sometimes it just seemed to juvenile. But overall, it was a well written story. And am I the only one who hopes Jamie and Maddie get together in the future?
*****SPOILER ALERT*****
Did not see the twist coming. I assumed Julie/Queenie/Verity/Eva? was not actually giving the Germans all the info they needed (she was too strong, too intelligent) but I didn't think she'd be writing a secret code to Maddie. And the big twist...did not see that coming in a million years. I can't imagine having to make that choice. How do you shoot your best friend?!? Even if you know it's what she wants?!? Can't imagine having to make the choice. Can't imagine jumping out of a plane into enemy territory. Can't imagine being shot at and having to crash land a burning plane. I know this wasn't a true story, but similar things happen/happened every day in war. People really are amazing.
