As always, Le Guin's writing is lush. However, many of these stories were meandering and stream of consciousness, so I had a hard time connecting and engaging with most of them. That being said, the stories that stood out to me were The Diary of the Rose, Buffalo Gals Won't You Come Out Tonight, and Horse Camp.

Volume 1 was a good mix of stories I had read before and stories I hadn't. One reason why I admire Ursula Le Guin is that she can do it all--poetry and essays as well as SF/F and realistic fiction. Several of the stories that I hadn't read before were realism, and they made me consider the link between this genre and tragedy. I have to mention that "May's Lion" destroyed me. There were only one or two stories that I didn't love in this collection; the rest were fantastic.

I especially love Le Guin's writing because of her powerful language, the careful choice of words and the beautiful, unexpected connections, subversions and metaphors, they are poignant, moving and thought-provoking. Her characters are usually unconventional and fascinatng, defying stereotypes each in their own ways. These stories are perfect examples of all this. They are of different types, but the interesting introduction gives all the context and explanations I needed. I do suggest you read the introduction before the stories. Among my favourite ones, Unlocking the Air: it's all in the title, but you should read it to understand. It's also surprisingly timely, though quite old.

Not really for me. I much prefer Le Guins science fiction! I loved volume 2 of this short story collection but this 1st volume was rather boring to me...
