This woman can WRITE. One of many reasons I loved the film Women Talking so much. Her talent is all the more clear to me now.
Usually with audiobooks, I just have them around for road trips and such, but I found myself actually wanting to sit and listen to this one even without a multitasking activity (okay, I did listen to most of it on a road trip still, but I was eager for it).
It's incredible how much she's been through and how eloquently she can describe it and reflect on it. I teared up multiple times. The message of the book is honestly one I needed.
Really excellent read, and I highly recommend the audiobook.

I ended up a bit torn on this one because I think there is a lot of insightful and open examination of difficult topics that I appreciated, but I got hung up a lot on her views of medical professionals, which were often quite negative and untrusting, but then has a couple moments of appreciation or understanding in certain instances that she does not seem to critically apply to others? Some of the stories seem to be written from her frustrated/stressed POV at the time of the event, but then that energy is still carried into the reflective text as well? I just found it very strange and hard to get a handle on, especially when she includes sort of a perfunctory disclaimer at the end about how in her last essay she felt she needed to leave Canada to receive adequate health care, but insists that is not support for those who are looking to change the way universal health care operates in Canada.
Anyways, like I said, I got hung up there. Otherwise I appreciate the essay format of the book, Polley's passionate writing and narration in the audiobook, and the perspectives of events and feelings at different stages of her life.
