Was expecting more of a love triangle and angst around that but instead got childhood trauma. I thought Mal was a lovely MMC, but I didn’t really get their chemistry. The whole mom plot line felt both overdone and not fully resolved.

I did really like the themes in this book and the plot for the most part. Honestly, I just didn't love our main characters as much as I should have. I loved having to intelligent, strong, good hearted, black characters be the leads but the way that they were written took away from me loving them so much. I think a prequel to this book where I learn even more about Josephine would make me love this book.

This book got me at the beginning, lost me in the middle, and then got me back towards the end. It felt like a writing style I’ve read before, but I just can’t put my finger on who it reminds me of.

It felt very formulaic. I am honestly getting tired of childhood trauma being the central theme in romance novels. It seems like that has been the pattern in most of the books I’ve read recently.

From the title and cover, I thought this would be a love triangle. I didn’t see anything like that until the very end when everything blew up. I am usually a fan of dual POV, especially in audiobooks. But for this one, I feel like it would have worked better if it was told entirely from Jo’s perspective.

I didn’t like Mal’s character until the end. Ezra was just a self-absorbed a**hole. The fight with Mal for saving her didn’t even make sense to me. It was just off.

Normally, I feel some kind of emotion after finishing a book, even if it’s just annoyance or frustration. But this ended and that was it. No strong feelings. No lingering thoughts.

Wanted to like it more. I wanted more backstory. But the way people show up for one another dealing with mental health and relationships was well done.
slow-paced

Honestly idk I liked this book even though it was kind of all over the place? The characters were messy and interesting, I really liked the story but it didn’t flow…. Which is fine

While I was reading this, I thought ‘huh this reminds me of that doctor contemporary fiction I read a few years ago.’ Turns out it was the same author (yes I know I don’t read/reread blurbs before I get stuck in). Enjoyable but nothing special
