My blood pumps faster when reading Randell! The psychology of the moments is so intense that I can barely wait until it’s resolved. This one involves a tenant and landlord and “circumstances”. (Mwah-hah-hah) Oh, and a liar.
Every character was odious and the ending was horrible. No.pay off at all.

Very British. Almost funny. Multiple characters/plotlines makes it bearable to read (the main plot has exactly 3 major events which his a little boring to me)
Moderate: Fatphobia, Kidnapping
Minor: Vomit, Murder
4⭐️ = Good.
Hardback.
This, sadly Ruth’s final book, was a real surprise. It had an unusual storyline but was very easy to follow. I thought I knew where this book was heading but I was only partly correct.
It shows how lies can tangle you up in knots.

There’s been recent publicity about Roald Dahl’s books being revised to remove language which could now be considered outdated and offensive. Perhaps when they’ve finished, they could take a look at ‘Dark Corners’, where the word ‘fat’, and other size-judgemental language, is used repeatedly.
It felt very much like it was written, and set, in about 1982, but the occasional mention of the internet revealed it’s much more recent than that. None of the characters act or think like 21st century people.
What’s more, the plot is very slow-moving, with pages and pages of Carl’s repetitive and pathetic thoughts. Inexplicably, a female character (whose role in the main storyline is minimal) is the victim of a shocking crime that had absolutely no resolution or explanation and seemed entirely gratuitous.
This is a horrible little book and I should have followed my instincts and ditched it early on, rather than clinging on to see how the story resolved.
