Love this book so much. And I thoroughly enjoyed the audiobook, too. I highly recommend it.

The title says it all. The characters endure so much. It's hopeful and tragic at the same time.

Well, I was very surprised by this book because Nevada Barr usually writes in one particular genre. Most of her books are about a park ranger who solves some kind of crime. I assumed that is what this one would be, but it couldn't have been further from it. It was a historical novel set in the late 1800's and was a lesbian love story. Mostly I liked it, but I was put off by how the school teacher was attracted to a fifteen year old girl. It just felt too young and a little pedophile to me in the teacher loving student theme.

It's a long story that made me cringe at times. But overall, it's a powerful story about two women making their own way in the word after circumstances force them together. There is quite a bit of cringy language and scenarios though. So prepare yourself for that.

Didn't care for it though I love the Anna Pigeon books. Boring? Overblown? Not sure how it failed.

It was a pretty decent book. I will say that I didn't like that the scene involving sex with a man was very detailed while kissing between the two women was barely alluded to, which was kind of annoying.

Feels like an alien’s approximation of a same sex relationship. An entirely implied physical relationship between the main characters intermixed with graphic rape scenes leave the nature of the main characters relationship up to debate as well as the message of the novel.

This was one of the most disappointing books I've read in a very long time. Filled with unnecessary descriptions, mediocre characterization, and a romance that is forced at the reader rather than gradually developed for most of the story, this book falls short of every expectation the description stirred in me. If I hadn't have spent money on this book, I would never have finished it.

I made it half-way through, and though I admire NB's writing and am a long-time fan, this book was just WAY TOO depressing. Amoral moralists subjugating and/or persecuting women; timing probably bad, given the reversal of Roe v. Wade.
