Maria Edgeworth is purported to be one of Jane Austen's favorite writers, but if this novel is indicative of typical Edgeworth, Austen's own work is VASTLY superior. This book is a fairly typical early 19th century romance, but it is packed full of every dramatic event the author could dream up. Over the top. And too long. And a heroine who is really not believable, so pure of heart is she. Didn't make me want to read any additional Edgeworth offerings.

A very enjoyable read! This book is full of weird events (cross-dressing duels! major plot points revolving around parrots!) and is written in a very lively and entertaining style, with witty dialogue. A lot of interesting thoughts on gender, genre, and friendship.

A really fascinating read. I love how self-aware Maria Edgeworth is, and I thought the characterisation here was great, though I’m not sure how I feel about the ending.

Midway between Burney’s Camilla and Austin’s Pride and Prejudice. Very intriguing and interesting both for pleasure and literature.
