Almost put it down in the first half because of unlikeable characters, but kept going. Second half was definitely better. Nice ending, tied up in a bow.

Did I secretly enjoy the family drama in spite of some of the secrets kind of being predictable and overdone? Sometimes. Did I kind of cringe at the behavior of these family members throughout the novel? Certain scenes yes. I didn't really see any similarities or parallels between The Golden Hotel and Dirty Dancing. That might have been a great marketing ploy on the social media team behind this book because I definitely pictured characters that were going to parallel or mimic Baby + Johnny in some way shape or form. While that didn't happen, I felt like the drama was being told instead of simply shown to us. I was being told what the characters felt but not experiencing what it was they were actually feeling. Plus the different POVs made it hard to keep track of who knew what and who was simply lying or being withholding certain information. Overall, a light read but nothing award-worthy in my opinion.

When I saw this one compared to Mrs. Maisel, my expectations shot WAY up. And immediately I figured that it couldn’t possibly be anywhere near as satisfying. I was happily mistaken. It has a similar mix of neurotic family drama, humour, gentle life lessons and ambiance.

This is one of those messy family sagas that you can enjoy getting lost in, with a few laughs along the way, a little heartbreak, and a feeling of nostalgia.

The sense of place is outstanding. The Golden Hotel takes on the role of another character in the novel, and I totally fell in love with the Golden.

I thought the author managed the full cast very well. Most of the characters felt well realized, interesting, and entertaining.

I was curious to see how it would all wrap up, and I can’t decide if it was too neat for my liking or if the end was right after all.

The pacing was a little slow to start, but very soon I was invested in the future of the Golden and the people who love it.

I listened to this and the narration was stellar!
