This book felt like filler to me. Morgan is just annoying an stupid throughout most of the book and the romance seems completely forced. I wasn't feeling it.

This is definitely a transition after the chaos that was the last book, but it’s still rather good! The pace isn’t as quick, the stakes aren’t nearly as high, but after the wild, unhinged nature of the last book, it feels much needed—LAWD knows Morgan needs a second to catch her breath (no pun intended 🫠)! A lot of groundwork is being laid for what’s to come, we’re starting almost from scratch again which I LIVE FOR! There is a lot of heartbreak, but there’s also a lot of hope peeking it’s head in. I’m falling back in love with the series, and I’m so happy I decided to reread it and finish it this time!

After nearly being burnt to death by the boy she thought loved her, Morgan finds herself unsure on who she can trust and uncertain of her own judgment and powers. When she senses dark magick in Widows Vale Morgan is Scared that it's Cal and Selene back to finish her off.

In these books Morgan grows in confidence and re-forges old friendships, as well as making new friends. Her confusion over her feelings for Cal and Hunter are well written, and the continuation and deepening of the Wiccan world and Morgans own history is compelling and enchanting.

4.5 stars.

As the result of another re-read, I have decided that Awakening is by far my favourite of the Wicca series so far. And I'll be honest, the main reason for this is that Hunter Niall features very prominently in this book. As a result of the previous events of Dark Magick, Morgan and Niall have more and more reasons to work together and be in each other's company. I particularly enjoy the dynamic of their relationship here - there is the anger and the irritation but also the deep respect and wonder that they both experience in the other. Hunter and his cousin Sky have always been favourite characters in this series for me, and I can't see this re-read changing my mind.

Surprisingly during the latter part of this book, I actually shed tears and felt a great overwhelming feeling of despair for certain characters contained within. This was something I don't remember ever experiencing during a reading of this series, which just goes to show how a re-read of a very familiar series can change as you grow older.

The title of this book is very apt I feel, as not only does it document Morgan's awakening to deep personal feelings she has previously been afraid to acknowledge, but it also charts her awakening to both the good and bad sides of Wicca, of the ways in which the Council contain these sides, and also to how everyone has to make difficult choices and face up to things, no matter how hard it is to do so.

I remember why I loved this series so much. The sweetness of it holds up for me. I love seeing more into Hunter’s life and as I’m reading, I realize how cohesive Cate Tiernan made this series. So much from the first few novels ends up being relevant in the last novels and all throughout.

Man does this author love a good cliffhanger, or what? Once again I was sucked right in, and am greatly enjoying this series. Quick, light reading, with some witchy vibes.

I like Hunter. Hunter can stay.
