Was going to give it higher until I read the end because

I don’t think it’s realistic that Lucy would resign.

I liked the addition of Holly but was frustrated by the lack of introspection on Lucy’s part in this book.

This is my all-time favorite book.

Actual rating: 4 stars. Most of the writing was great and I liked the actual ghost story itself. The given rating is an entire star lower because there was absolutely no reason for Lucy to have a brand new lady rival. Ladies at each other's throats is an old and tired trope and didn't enhance the book at all. If anything, Lucy could have been portrayed as butting heads with Kate Godwin as usual instead of an entirely new character who excels at things Lucy does not. I'm honestly so tired of stories like this. The book ends with the ladies at a strained peace with each other. No. I refuse to accept stuff like this any longer. Women should be there to support and enhance each other's lives. Not fighting over inane things, not bringing each other down, and certainly not draining the life out of this story. Unfortunately, that's what ended up happening. Oh well. The other two books were great and I'm still planning to read book four. We'll see.
