This novel keeps true to the traditional tale while incorporating a full back story replete with characters who are important throughout the story. The twist on the tale in the enchanted forest is original albeit confusing. It was never explained why Aurore didn’t need to sleep for one hundred years. This would be a great discussion starter on what constitutes a good ruler as Aurore and her father do things differently than previous rulers by their interest in the common folk.

I was really disappointed and completely turned off by the end. Since when was Prince Charming, Aurora's cousin???? I mean how can you have a love story with one's cousin? Not cool. Why would I even recommend this book to someone to read when she falls in love with her cousin? See, it completely ruined the book for me. I can't even get past it. I thought it was such an interesting concept, and I liked the writing much better than Greogry Maguire's....but seriously. I hated the ending. Hated.
This is one of the more... uh... creative retellings I've read. It certainly does its own thing with the story of Sleeping Beauty. I liked it and it kept me guessing, so if you're looking for something different... give this a try.

Sleeping Beauty's story isn't one of my favorite fairy tales (especially the original tale which is problematic on many levels) but Dokey has a knack for taking the best parts of a tale and spinning it with a modern twist in its proper out of time setting. Aurore is a fabulous heroine who is not afraid to fight to change her fate, even if it means leaving behind all those who are trying to save her.
This is my second book by Cameron Dokey, and while I like it less than The Storyteller’s Daughter, it was still a charming retelling of a fairy tale. The first part of the book dragged a bit but the last 20% was interesting and a very unique take on the story of Sleeping Beauty.
