Firefly Beach is a nice summer read. It's full of dysfunctional family drama centered around a wealthy widowed matriarch and her three adult daughters. Luanne Rice is a prolific writer but this is the first novel of hers I have read. I'll likely read more - something to pack along for a vacation in New England.

This book is about the complicated relationships of parents, children and siblings. This family harbors many secrets and tragedy that affected the three sisters growing up. Caroline is the oldest and most reserved, running a small inn and caring for her sisters and mother. Clea is next and is married, the serene one and least affected by the family tragedies. And Skye is the youngest, a passionate artist, alcoholic and married to a bad man. The mother, Augusta, is reserved, pulled away from her daughters by her lingering love for her deceased husband and the events of many years ago. The three sisters struggle to come to terms with horrible childhood memories and letting go of their haunting past.

‘Firefly Beach’ is not my first Luanne Rice novel and I seriously doubt it will be my last. I really enjoyed the story, liked the characters but at times wanted to beat their heads into a wall.
