Wow! This book takes you on a roller coaster. It took a little longer to get into than I usually like, but I persisted. I’m glad I did. Love at first sight (almost) and it continued as a love that saw many iterations over several decades. The story described their love through the AIDS crisis of the 1980s and continued through 9-11 and so many things. It ends with a reflection of a happy life, is that an HEA? A book I didn’t know I needed.

Firstly, this is NOT a romcom. This book needs a more depressing cover.
It's definitely a love story and a well-written one. It's a sweet book, but a bit too repetitive in descriptions and a bit too sweeping. Trying to cover so many decades meant brushing by lots of plot points.

Paul Rudnick never met a punchline he could resist, even when the moment doesn’t really call for a laugh. Still, despite some misplaced jokes and rabbit holes that serve no real purpose other than to tickle or delight, he’s crafted a lovely story about the decades-long romance between a kvetching Jewish playwright and an old money WASP. I’d recommend this book, particularly to queers who hate reading history but need to know theirs, regardless — or to anyone who wants to spend some time with two boys in love and their charming found family of misfits.
