The very first book within the Expanse series and my very first Sci Fi read. I went in with high expectations for the first book as I heard great things about it from various BookTubers and I was blown away as "Leviathan Wakes" exceeded all expectations.

Leviathan Wakes is set in the future where civilization have colonised Mars, Saturn and have a main space station/city called the Belt. The book follows two main POVs , one of James Holden who is second in command of a ship called the Canterbury and the second is of Joe Miller who is a detective on the Belt. The book includes mystery, political intrigue and interplanetary conflict.

The story is well paced and slows down in the rough moments to give dramatic effect or to really make you understand the dire situation the characters are in. James S.A Corey have done an amazing job of putting this together because from the moment I picked the book up I was just chapter after chapter to find out what's going to happen.

Initially reading "Leviathan Wakes" I was letting the book take me for a ride. However 2 chapters in I realised I needed to remember key details such as Names, Character Attributes and Locations as they were essential to understand the full story. The character list is vast however not too overwhelming to take away from the enjoyment of reading the story.

Solid sci-fi space opera. Entertaining and great would building. Miller was interesting character - and his story arc was nicely done. Holden a bit boring and idealized - but I can see how this character was good choice for Millers opposite. Liked how horror elements were used - enjoyable read.

This is solid sci-fi. The combination of noir and galactic politics was well-balanced. However, I never bought the obsession of Miller had with Juliet. The show did a much better job of showing his obsession developing over time.

It was aight. Maybe not what I was looking for at the moment. My last book put me in a reading slump in a bad way and this slower, more political then I expected space saga might not have been the best thing to try to get me excited to read again. The last bit made me kinda sad and it grossed me out too. Body horror is not really my thing, so if it’s not yours, be prepared for a little bit of that. I’m officially interested in the TV show now. Not sure if I’ll continue the book series however.
