This was a beautiful book full of fierce female friendships and the touch librarians have in our life. And it was sad and hopeful, historical and mysterious, all wrapped in

This is the first audiobook I’ve ever given 5 stars, and now all that come after have such a high standard. This story was told like an epic and was incredibly engrossing. In my opinion, Jojo Moyes is one of the best authors of current times. She writes the most believable characters and develops them so well that nothing seems forced or set up. I am so pleasantly surprised with my listening experience.

I really loved this book. Beautifully written with great characters and a story that kept you wanting to read the next chapter. As a woman, it was particularly moving to read from the perspective of 5 women who endure despite the misogynistic and sexist society that was the 1930s in America.

Moves along. Didn’t find a lot of things to ponder or that I wanted to write down.

Didn’t seem consistent with Fred’s character or prior statements that he and Alice didn’t wait until they were married, especially considering the era.

Parts were pretty predictable. Like the annulment.

I loved the characters: such strong, amazing, but realistically drawn women.
The setting too, was so well rendered. What an awful time and place. I'm sure the beauty of the place was supposed to shine through, but the dirt and poverty and hardship, and knowing those kinds of things really happened there and still happen all over the world, and that we all benefit from the misery of others, was tough.

Several times I had to skip a page or two to avoid traumatising content
a woman being beaten, a dog being killed

But reading about the friendship and the women's determination was wonderful.
