The Phantom of the Opera receives a solid 3-star rating from me. I didn't particularly love it, but I also didn't hate it. It falls into that middle ground where I'm satisfied to have read it, but I don't feel compelled to revisit it anytime soon.
I completely understand why this novel is considered a classic. There's an undeniably captivating element to the whole Phantom-Opera-House love triangle. Gaston Leroux's writing effectively captures the eerie, Gothic atmosphere, and I have to admit, the underground lair and the mysterious ghostly events were intriguing. I could almost imagine the candle-lit labyrinth and hear the haunting music in my mind.
However, there were moments when I didn't feel as engaged. The pacing felt off at times, with segments that dragged on or felt excessively dramatic. Despite Christine's talent and charm, she didn't consistently stand out to me as a strong character. It seemed like she was being pushed around by both Raoul and the Phantom, which diminished my investment in the romantic tension. Speaking of romance, the Phantom's obsession felt unsettling—not in an exciting, thrilling way, but more in a "this guy really needs therapy" kind of way.
Nevertheless, I found the Phantom to be an intriguing character. He's tragic and complex, and I genuinely felt sympathy for him at times, despite his questionable (okay, more than questionable) actions. The combination of genius and madness was compelling to read, even though his "romantic" gestures went way too far.
Ultimately, I didn't dislike The Phantom of the Opera, but it didn't leave a lasting impression on me either. It's a decent read with some memorable moments, but it didn't leave me eager to gush about it. I suppose it's one of those books where you're either fully invested or somewhat indifferent—and I find myself somewhere in the middle.
