i was already devastated by the end of the last chapter but then leroux gave me an epilogue to make things worse.

(2021 re-read review) I really enjoyed rereading this classic. I didn't remember many of the finer points of the novel from my previous read, and I didn't know the musical well enough back then to really pick up on all the small things that were lifted from the book. More than just a few direct lines were taken from the novel. Leroux's Phantom is much darker and more supernatural. Where Webber's Phantom is a man who is ugly with a bad past, Leroux's Phantom seems to be a truly unearthly thing all the way to the end. He is far more sadistic, as well, trapping the men who go to save Christine in his torture chamber and leaving them to swelter and die. Erik's "change of heart" at the end was still so....creepy. He was just so creepy from start to finish.

(2007 review) Loved this work!! One of those classics that is anything but stale and boring. The POV makes it all the more interesting-the only thing it is missing from its amazing-ness is the music!
