I went into this with no expectations and was pleasantly surprised. The mystery of Christine and Raoul's disappearances and of the actual Phantom were very intriguing. The way the author set out to tell the story, mixing in an omnipresent voice with that of various characters was really cool as well!

“Poor, unhappy Erik! Shall we pity him? Shall we curse him? He asked only to be'some one,' like everybody else. But he was too ugly! And he had to hide his genius or use it to play tricks with, when, with an ordinary face, he would have been one of the most distinguished of mankind! He had a heart that could have held the entire empire of the world; and, in the end, he had to content himself with a cellar. Ah, yes, we must need pity the Opera ghost...”

I’ve been swirling too long in the YA adult section , that I have forgotten what good old’ Gothic feels like..
It was like an esctacy thrusted upon my weary soul , it actually turned out to be quite enjoyable for a novel written in the 1900’s , quite detailed in a brilliant way
I could still smell Parisian fragrences with those solemn airs , the dramatic dim in the opera , the mysteries ,the people of the opera with all their pretentious gaitey that ever hids secret melancholies , each his faith has laid in the phantom’s hands.
So the obscurity kept me flipping pages I felt –as I did , the rhythm of conducting going faster and the notes pitching higher and bolder when reaching that tipping point of dramatic scenes ( as if words had their own tunes to deliver ) , it was both exciting and enigmatic .
I really did love some of the “big events” of the story : the fall of the chandelier , Carlotta and her infamous “co-ak” , two managers bidding against the will of a ghost , as the truth slowly unravels as the good historian proceeds.
The book also , dealt with a tremendously sorrowful matters …I could feel my veins throbbing when I read the bitter misery of jealousness , and hopeless love , anger ! and the unbearable anguish those lovers endured.
And then there was Erik: the phantom , the genius , the angel , the devil , driven mad for he loved the fairest of them all ; Christine .
Erik is -as many out there , condemened to a life of gloom and desolation because of his “ ghastly” face and utter revolting “ugliness” ,he cannot as so much have the least of pleasures and he is even called a ‘monster’ , that really makes feel sad and angry about the world …
I could see in the book, that appearances had a great deal to play in people’s life , more like , it determined how a person would live .it’s a troubling fact that exist still .
If Christine hadn’t that beauty divine , if Raoul wasn’t the handsome prince charming , would they ever have chosen each other ? would their love had altered if one of them tragically lost their beauty? a love based on such a fragile and interim thing such as physical beauty is more right than to love the person himself , it is the life’s most unfair deeds .if Erik had a handsome face he would have done miracles , and he would not be the wounded devil .
Erik was treated as if ugliness was his one and only grave fault , that he and only he was to bear it …..And somehow they decided to pitty him , not to help him or redeem his lost humanity , but just to pitty him , what a horrid thing to do for a person as lonely , and severely scarred by all the human race .
It was translated , and originally written in a way of splendor and with such rhetoric, that I thought the words were speaking and mimicking the unfathomable going drama. It was indeed a good read.

loosely based on real incidents, The Phantom of the Opera is the story of a cursed man's desperation for love, and his descent into madness on failing to obtain it. a story that swings from paranormal to realism, from strangeness to sorrow, from madness to acceptance, it is undoubtedly an interesting tale of its time.
