Pour l'instant c'est un de mes livres préférés de la collection penguins. J'adore comment c'est écrit avec les poemes, par contre la fin elle est trop triste.. Helga méritais mieux !!

Een verhaal over Gunnlaug Serpent-tongue die wil trouwen met Helga the Fair, maar te druk is met rondreizen en gedichten bedenken. Dan trouwt Hrafn met haar (omdat Hrafn boos was op Gunnlaug) waardoor Gunnlaug hem wil verslaan in een duel om Helga's hand. Dat loopt uit de hand en ze sterven allebei, Helga trouwt met een derde man en is ongelukkig tot ze sterft.
Ik kan me helemaal voorstellen dat mensen dit verhaal vroeger vertelden zodat men er iets van kon leren, maar wat de lessen dan zijn..? Geen idee.

Aside from the intense name-dumping and string of random events that lead to the interesting ending, it’s a decent book. It’s too bad it was written the way a child would tell a story (think “and then this happened, the man went to this country and fought him but he didn’t like that so...”), but then the poems the characters would randomly speak to one another were very beautiful, if, at times, out of place.
Even though there’s very little description in this book, I could still envision each character and event quite well - but I have no idea if my ideas fit the author’s own interpretation. The storyline, once you wrap your head around it, is solid: Gunnlaug wants to marry someone’s daughter, Helga, but is told to mature before he does, so he sets out on a series of travels. Then this other man, Hrafn, wants Helga’s hand in marriage as well and this whole rivalry ensues. Because of the unfortunate writing style, though I didn’t enjoy it as much as I would’ve liked.
