This has the occasional brilliant one-liners a reader expects from an Elmore Leonard book, but this was otherwise a predictable blend of western mixed with 70s romanticized detective drama.

This one feels a bit like Leonard doing his riff on the 87th Precinct novels, although it's a bit more of a "can we catch him" than a true "whodunit". As usual, it's got quirky characters and amazing dialogue. It's not my favorite Leonard, but it's a good one, and that makes it well worth reading.

Very good read! I liked all the characters and loved the ending. Gritty cop story that kept me guessing. The bad guy was developed with near perfection. Elmore Leonard is a great author, no matter the genre.

Leonard at his best. As always with the legendary crime author, City Primeval features superlative dialogue and a well-realized setting. What separates this novel from the lesser works of his impressive ouvre is a plot whose quality matches the standard set by its characters. Utterly engrossing from first word to last.
