Devadatta tells the story of Buddha's early journey as a monk. The story starts with his first day with Dhepa as his teacher. Dhepa tries to get Siddhartha to practice "ordeals," where a monk will physically punish their body in hopes of purifying it or being enlightened. Siddhartha proves to the world that he is great monk, and performs incredible acts, without having to perform any "ordeals."

Devadatta formally introduced in this story. He was briefly introduced in the last book, but finally gets the time to tell his story. As a young boy, Devadatta grows up with his birth mother, and a step father. His father treats him poorly, and gets picked on by his classmates. Unhappy with life, he retreated into the woods and has been raised by several people, who greatly impact his morals, one a wolf, one an aesthetic, and another an old hag.

The "book" in the series is very interesting, but it doesn't seem like much gets accomplished. Mostly because the character Devadatta is being set up for an interesting moral or lesson later on in the series.
