I'm a sucker for a good time loop story.
The author's note at the end mentioned that he tried to write a story where the romance was front and center... but that is not exactly the case here. It's difficult to see whether Mariana is interested in Carter because he's the only one she's been able to talk to for a large period of time, and we don't ever see Carter interacting with anyone else, so we can't get a sense of his own feelings or if he just treats everyone in a similar fashion.
