I remember picking up Queen of Hearts and not being entirely sold on the story right away. I also remember reading the last book in that trilogy and loving it to pieces. So, I started this first book with different expectations, knowing very well that Oakes builds her stories and characters up and that it will all be worth it in the end.

And that made it possible for me to really enjoy this wild ride, from start to finish. It helped that I really liked the romance between Booth and Wendy. I liked how they met, how they were together, how they saw each other and I liked how Oakes portrayed the difficulties in their relationship and the many people not being too fond of it. It makes Wendy, not daring to have courage, believable.

And that’s where her journey to Neverland comes in. It’s very clear that Wendy needs to grow as a character. And it’s also very clear that Neverland is gonna force her to do that. Because, Oakes chose for a dark Neverland and a dark Peter Pan. Of course, that’s not what we see of Neverland right away. At first it seems magical and playful and free of adults and rules, but there’s always this undertone, this feeling that something isn’t right and the more we see of Neverland and Peter, the more we realise that something is very very off.

The plot and the story are a little slow and Oakes takes her time to describe things. I personally think it really helped shape Wendy as a characters, the way she does things and views the world. And it helps building the gripping atmosphere. I don’t normally think in images, but this book was very vivid and really came to life in my head.

When I closed the book I was on the brink of ordering the second and third book right away (I promised myself not to buy entire series anymore without having read the first book), but I’ll show some grown up restraint and wait until I have money to actually do so. But, I’ll be counting down the days, because I wasn’t ready to leave Wendy, Michael and Neverland behind.

This is not Disney's Neverland. Oakes' retelling of the familiar story lets us ponder Wendy's side of the story and explore a darker, more dangerous Neverland and question the innocence of the eternal boy-child. I love the explorations of domestic violence and addiction. The description is rich and engaging, and the plot is unstoppable once it takes off.

HMmmmm yandere Peter makes brain go BrrR.

Also take a shot everytime the word "discombobulated" is used. It’s such a niche word yet you will be plastered by the time your finished reading.

I can't decide if I liked this or not. It had a creepy, Lord of the Flies feel to it, which was not what I expected. I definitely flew through it, trying to get to the end but also not wanting to read the darker parts. Hmmmm.....

If you think you know the Peter Pan story, take a moment and pick up this interesting retake through the eyes of the Darling daughter, Wendy. The beginning feels similar as Peter approaches the Darling family and they are whisked away to Neverland, but that is only the beginning.

I loved seeing this story through Wendy's eyes. I liked seeing her view over her brother John's as it is easy to see how John could be easily swept into Peter Pan's influence with the Lost Boys encouraging the antics. Wendy was definitely swept into Peter Pan's world, but it was interesting to see her see the truth.

This retailing isn't very kind to Peter pan and Tinkerbell, in this they are very horrible people and it's a little painful to read as I grew up with Peter pan stories and is very found of him, if you want a story About a brave, playful, stubborn but in the end a good young boy this isn't the book for you. First of all most of the characters seemed to be aged up a bit to more fit in a romantic theme, which I was fine with and I did really enjoy the story. Not the first part very much but by the end I was hooked and couldn't stop listening to the audiobook. It's full of suspense and thrilling bits and you almost bit your nails in excitement in how it will end. I should have been prepared for it to be a cliffhanger, but I wasn't and now I'm really craving part to, hope it will be available soon!
