Intensely relatable, too eerily. I'm having a hard time describing how I feel about this collection, but needless to say I was impressed. It's poetry I will most likely revisit over and over. Her language is so evocative and real. I really am at a loss for words.

I've never been able to get into poetry and this wasn't really the right gateway for me.

you write poems to understand what you cannot understand. finally name the snapping beast you’ve tried to outrun your entire life. stop avoiding. stop the scorched fog of language that redirects the eye.

Some lines and poems did hit me hard, but mostly this poetry collection didn't resonate with me much, which is a shame, since I had such high expectations for it.

I can appreciate its brilliance, but maybe not my style of poetry

This was incredible. I’ve read more than a hundred books this year, and this was easily one of the best. I loved it.

Let us pretend,
for a moment,
this won’t ever end:
the relentless
machine of us.

Let us defy
the laws
of science
& inevitability,
say

we will go on

This was my first time reading anything by McKibbens and I’m so blown away. I haven’t read a poetry collection quite like this. I didn’t enjoy every single poem but the ones I did enjoy made me incredibly emotional.

Wonderful collection. Favorite poems: "the sandbox," "letter from my brain to my heart," "the ghost's daughter speaks: white elephant," and "una oración (bruja's soliloquy)."
