Shmutz started out strong but completely fizzled out by the end.

Raizl never even tried. It was always someone else’s fault, never her own. She wants to be “cured” without having to put in any work and that’s just not how it works. It made for a frustrating read.

3.0

• this was about a young Hasidic girl Raizl rebelling from her community, gaining a porn (shmutz) addiction, and exploring her sexuality while simultaneously trying to find a husband in an arranged marriage sort of way.

• it was decent enough but I really hated the ending. *spoilers: I really wanted her to explore more with Sam and was really cheering for her to leave her strict fundamentalist family, but that’s not what we ended up with.

• there were a lot of smaller stories, besides Sam, I really wanted to know more about. Like I wanted her to keep going to therapy and deconstructing her communities views and the homophobia and racism they lightly touched on the quickly went back to porn. there was also something really weird and vaguely SA happening with the Rebbetzen that was brought up multiple times all the way to the last few chapters but never explained or dove into. It just feels like there were a lot of missed opportunities to tell more of Raizl’s story.
