The title is cheesy.
The story is choppy.
I still enjoyed it.

If she wasn’t careful, Tess could get lost in wanting something this much, but fuck, was she ever done with being careful.

This was a cute enemies-to-lovers romance with a great small town Scotland setting and lots of great animals, but it didn't have that emotional gut punch that I know this author is capable of delivering. I can't even say I'm disappointed with this, because I'm not! I thought it was really sweet, had characters I really liked getting to know, good hooks for their personal stories. Tess is a vet moving back home to Scotland after a bad breakup in London. Lady Susannah is a recent widow wanting to do new things with her estate. They get off on the wrong foot, and I really liked that early animosity and tension between them. It didn't get resolved too early or too easily. The romance is relatively slow burn, but with the book being so short, sadly, it didn't actually feel that way. I could have honestly done with 100 more pages of build up. While I did like both women, Susannah's storyline really was not interesting to me in the end. I adore a closeted ice queen coming into her own, but the plot with Robin etc? Meh. And I wish that the class difference thing had a bigger part to play in the story. There were lots of great side characters and B-plots (Babs and Joan!), but none of them got quite enough of the spotlight for my tastes; another reason I wish this was longer. Even the exciting climax didn't feel developed enough.

Listened to the audiobook as read by Ruth Urquhart, which was really lovely. I mean, Scottish accents are really hard to beat, so this was just musical all around for me. And there was seamless switching between the different accents for all the characters, as well. So that definitely made this really enjoyable, notwithstanding all my other nitpicks. This is an author I'll definitely continue reading from, but this just wasn't as big of a win as I wanted.
