This book should have single-handedly saved me from my reading slump and after the great premise and all that online popularity, it was nowhere near able to. It wasn’t dreadful to read this book or hard to push through it, but I had to remind myself to continue and finish this due to the lack of a grip it had on me.

I think my main problem with this book is that the start of the budding romance didn’t feel real to me. Iris and Roman weren’t true rivals. On the job? Yes. As people? No.
What do you mean, they voluntarily went for lunch together when they supposedly still hated each other’s guts?

I’m surprised by how much I ended up liking Roman, though. For someone who was described like a walking cliche (“he was tall and lithe with cheekbones that could cut stone”), he had a lot of personality and ended up becoming the definition of ‘if he wanted to, he would’.
I’m not sure who fell first (the denial is strong in both protagonists), but I do believe he fell harder. And who doesn’t love a man who writes heartfelt letters while a lot of girls these days can’t even get a text back? Keep on raising the bar for young people, Roman, bring back yearning!

That being said: the plot/info dumping was chaotic and the lore very surface-level and vague.
(What do you mean, we don’t get to meet the god that started this humanitarian crisis until the epilogue of the book?? At this point, I’m not even reading the second instalment to answer the questions I have.)

Also, what happened to all possible feelings outside of the romance trope? I get it, it’s war time, the pacing is fast and there’s no time to mourn your loved ones for ages. Yet I can’t help but feeling Iris should have been a bit more
devastated by her mother’s death.
Emotions were mentioned but not accurately described, not closely examined in the slightest, because the show/plot must go on.

And the last thing that irked me: for someone writing about two young, exceptionally talented writers … the author herself is, well, not really. She’s not a bad writer at all, but just not good enough to pull this concept off, in my opinion. At least not compared to the expectations I had. Iris and Roman’s letters were the best part, I admit, because the characters obviously tried hard to get their words just right and being overly dramatic/poetic in their choice of words is valid, because I remember how I was as a teen. Quite some things felt forced though, either to propel the plot forward or to push a certain way of writing. I wish Ross had taken the time to flesh out the side characters some more, too. The contrast between the romantic feelings and the lack of any other form of dept regarding other connections made the whole thing fall flat for me.
So many sad things happened and I wasn’t moved to tears in the slightest.

3 stars for its potential and for (all guys like) Roman; they’re rare, but they exist and deserve more attention (for their efforts, not their cheekbones). A couple of changes or an extra draft round and the author could have had me. 😔

This was a hard to one to rate for me! I enjoyed it! It kept me hooked and invested in the world but I also feel like I kept waiting for the things to happen and they never did! Also, I feel like so much more of this book would've been gained if they aged up the characters by like four years. Like what was the point of them being like 18 and 19 years old. And maybe this is just me. I really like that. That being said I did like Kit and Iris and I was rooting for them. This was like basically what if World War II was said in a slightly magical world with vengeful gods and I feel like we got like snapshots of the war and like kind of why was happening, but it didn't really matter until we came to the end because like I was questioning, whether or not the Gods were real, which I guess maybe was the point. But I struggled with finding what was the point with the author was trying to make with the book. Which made me question how much I actually enjoyed the book I really like the writing! I feel like I needed more world building to really understand. I feel like she had a cutiebomb com idea about two typewriters being connected, but then also set it in a war. But I think I'm intrigued enough to read the second book.

I genuinely loved this and cannot wait to read more about Iris and Roman’s story. One of the best books I’ve read in quite some time - these characters will stick with me.
