So much of this is common sense with new terms and jargon attached, that I lost interest early in the book. He seems to give no credence to the true physiological causes of bad habits, leaning far too heavily on environmental factors and anthropological instincts. He has very little understanding of compulsive overeating. Just put foods in smaller bags, he says, and then we overeaters simply consume several bags. There were a few helpful tips here, but overall quite a disappointment

An ode to late-stage capitalism, diet culture, and toxic productivity.

I wish this had been an episode of a podcast and thus a waste of only one hour of my life instead of six.

“The biggest threat to success is not failure but boredom. We get bored with habits because they stop delighting us. As our habits become ordinary, we start derailing our progress to seek novelty. You have to fall in love with boredom. If you only do the work when it’s convenient or exciting, then you’ll never be consistent enough to achieve remarkable results.”

This was such a remarkable self-help book. Clear introduces his trauma in the introduction, which made this book compelling from the get-go. From there, he begins to narrate how his habits shaped who he became afterwards.

Atomic habits is a book that emphasises how minuscule habits, day by day, could lead to remarkable results. It builds and compounds.

Clear’s book focuses on the four laws of behaviour change, aka 4 steps on how to make your habits last and get rid of bad ones:

  1. Make it obvious
  2. Make it attractive
  3. Make it easy
  4. Make it satisfying

Every chapter is note worthy, I’ve lost count on how many times I had to pause this audiobook to write notes. This is something worth reading over and over again.
