Overall really good! Good pacing, love the dragons and the character building throughout. Didn’t blow my socks off but altogether a lovely read.

I really enjoyed this! I didn't love the audio narrator choice though, so if I read more of the series it will probably be text editions.
adventurous
Too slow, tone of narrator was odd. I didn’t like the concept and dialogue either.
Dragon book!!! This is set in an alternate historical world where there are dragons!!! The main character is naval captain for england and becomes a dragon handler. This was very focused on Lawrence and Temeraires friendship as well as the military training/strikes. I enjoyed the book a lot but i did find the training/fight scenes to be a bit wordy. Not my favorite naomi novik book, but still very enjoyable. I think 3.5 stars is more accurate.
i can't really put my finger on why this doesn't work for me. the prose is competent and fits the perspective character, and i think the dialogue is interesting, and i can see the shadows on a cave wall of what might be a fun setting........but i just don't know what i'm reading this for?
i don't see any story really, the plot consists of laurence going from points a to b to c while having polite conversation, and there's not really any conflict to interfere with those journeys. the most i've gotten is polite disapproval over how his presumed friend treats his dragon.
the whole thing feels like its treading water on a journey to nowhere. i'm waiting for godot but without the self-awareness that he, if he exists, might never arrive.
