-Thank you to the author for an eARC of this book. Receiving an ARC in no way influenced my review-

(Review was reposted as goodreads initially did not save)

I swear, this story gets better and better. Eira can be a little frustrating because she so impatient and impulsive, but I feel like it's all part of her growth as a character. I believe we'll see how the consequences of her impatience affect her in future books. It's so exciting to get to see a different location in this world, while still keeping with familiar characters from Solaris. Its a brilliant way to bring readers back while still giving them something new. The romance is so FRUSTRATING! But it keeps me coming back because now I NEED to know what happens. I would, however, enjoy more involvement from the other Solaris characters. I feel like they really got left out of this book and it was kind of hard to remember who was who since we saw so little of them.

Overall I feel like this was a strong second book, and really helped set up things for the third and future books.

A great story filled with spycraft, conspiracy, magic, twists, secrets, and trust issues. I really enjoyed the sequel to A TRAIL OF SORCERERS.

The story read like a fantasy spy thriller, with Eira being caught between two dangerous spy networks. Still reeling from the loss of her brother and isolating herself from her friends, I found her character arc to be a very compelling one. She was determined to do everything on her own until it finally became too much, which made for a very interesting read. Eira was definitely put through the wringer but comes out stronger for it.

The side characters were easy to love and had distinct personalities. Ducot is my new favourite to be sure. The romance arc with Cullen went in a good, if ultimately complex direction. There were some amazing bonding moments that I hope to see more of in the next book.

While there were some great action scenes, the bulk of this story's strength lay in the twists and revelations that Eira uncovered. I loved how she adapted to her unexpected role and turned into a force to be reckoned with.

This is a great sequel for anyone who loves Elise Kova's writing and the world of AIR AWAKENS. It promises more adventure in the third book, and I can't wait to hop onto the ride!

I think if I actually commit to reading the Air Awaken series before continuing this series, it will make more sense. We started getting introduced to characters from one of Elise Kova series, and like I am aware of them, but I don't know their stories.

First off let me so I was STOKED to receive an ARC for A Hunt of Shadows. It was one of the books I was very much looking forward to in 2022. I found I enjoyed the second half of the story more than the first.
I was frustrated with most of the main characters in the first half. I found it a little hard to relate to their interpersonal skills.
For one Eira's lifelong dream and passion were to see Mure, meet its people, and enjoy its beauty. But her grief was so heavy we as the reader didn't get to enjoy any of that with her. I suppose reading the connection series with Vi first would be a great idea.
Eira never seemed to think through her actions and her grief made her avoid her friends and very singularly minded when it came to revenge. A good part of the book was her sulking in her room, avoiding her friends, or treating them badly for showing concern and making huge mistakes. But on the same note, it was believable because grief can manifest in unexpected ways. I just hate the trope where the MC withdraws from everyone because no one can understand their feelings. Eira did show growth and was able to learn from her mistakes.

I agree with another reviewer that there seemed to be a bit of repetition at the beginning of the story and that the relationship between Cullen and Eira didn't really click for me. I can see where they were attracted to each other through similar backgrounds. BTW I love Cullen, more than I like Eira, to be honest. But there really wasn't much interaction between them. I would have loved to see them working together more often but Eira was very impulsive and seemed to do most things alone. As I said though she did learn and grow I think not having Cullen on screen most of the time hurt the flow of the romance.
Spoiler
Oh and Cullen..... In what universe was keeping that info from her a good idea?? Especially after your nice evening together. Low blow buddy.YOu got the reaction you deserve there.

Anywho as I said in the beginning. The second half of the story really did pick up for me and by the ending, I was yelling * See spoiler tab*
