1.5-2 stars. Okay, but some of the characters were just ridiculous. A little too black and white; not nearly enough gray to make an interesting mystery.

I love a 2-day read. This one was quick and easy. Not much about it is particularly great, and not much is particularly terrible.
Kat Novak is the bulldog protagonist, a medical examiner who grew up in the Projects. When junkies start mysteriously OD'ing, she is not about to give up on the case even when her boss, the police, the DA (her ex-husband), and the mayor all tell her to ease up. She's a bit too hard-shelled for me; just as the primary male character is a bit too perfect (rich, intelligent, handsome, kind, and interested). But I did not solve the mystery before it was revealed, and it had a lot of action and twists.
Gerritsen admits that she began writing romance before moving into mystery/thrillers, and this book is one of her crossovers. I'm not particularly well-versed in either genre, so I'm not sure how that affected the overall experience.

A classic early medical thriller with a touch of romance from Tess Gerritsen.
Kat Novack is a medical examiner in Boston and after two bodies come in under similar circumstances, she becomes suspicious about what may be the cause. As she tries to unravel the mystery, it takes her from the more nefarious parts of town to the police station to the mayor's office. When Kat herself is targeted she knows she has to figure out who is behind these deaths, before the next body in the morgue is hers.

3.5 I discovered Tess Gerristen quite by accident while in the doctors’ office. There was a copy of the Surgeon, and I began reading. I then read all of her thrillers back to back. Her books were turned into a television series called Rizzoli & Isles. As much as I am a fan of her psychological suspense thrillers, I never ventured into her earlier works. I was surprised to learn she started with romantic suspense. Girl Missing is what Tess herself calls her bridge novel from romantic suspense to thriller. I enjoyed this mystery and was tickled to see where it all began. Mini review: strong characters, romance and murder that kept me engaged.
Kat Novak is the medical examiner in Boston, MA. The first body that arrives that morning is a mystery. A beautiful young woman with a matchbook clutched in her fist containing a seven digit number. When Kat calls that number it belongs to a prominent citizen. As the bodies begin to pile up, Kat realizes there is a problem..but the more she digs, and the more she protests, the greater the danger she is in.
I liked Kat; she is tenacious and not the least bit concerned with the politics that go on within the mayor and police department. She cares about stopping a killer and saving innocent lives. She was relentless when following a lead and is a straight shooter. When she begins to develop feelings for her prime suspect things got a little complicated. I wasn’t a huge fan of the romance but felt they worked well together as an investigative team.
Girl Missing offered up a keen murder mystery with unique suspects and characters. I had fun piecing things together. I can clearly see the Gerristen I have come to adore within these pages. While I questioned a few technical aspects, particularly in the ME’s office, I could not find fault with the plot and pacing. The romance while a significant thread really stayed in the background. While I felt they interacted well it lacked that sizzle romantic suspense usually brings. Truth be told the Surgeon is a stronger, tighter, darker novel that left me breathless. While this didn’t wow me, I am glad that I read Girl Missing, and quite enjoyed the tale she wove.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley.
This was not the first novel I have read by Tess Gerritsen.I generally enjoy her work, quick crime or police procedurals.
This book was not an exception to the rule, but seemed more formulaic than usual.
If you enjoy Tess Gerritsen's work, stick to her more mature works.

Kat Novak is an assistant Medical Examiner in Albion, Massachusetts, originally from the wrong side of the tracks. When ODs show up in her morgue with odd tox screens, she teams up with a potential suspect to discover what's killing town junkies.
Edge-of-your-seat suspense, with a dash of romance, Tess Gerritsen's Girl Missing is un-put-down-able. One of her earlier works, it shows Gerritsen's transition from romantic suspense to crime thrillers. Violence and language are minimal, and the sex is not graphic, either. If you love thrillers, but dislike graphic descriptions, this may be the perfect read for you. Just the right amount of gritty. The romance is a bit of a side plot, and fits in nicely with the thriller/suspense elements.

Loooooooved it. Tess Gerritsen writes books how I want to read them. Crime thriller with a female lead and a primarily medical angle. A+.

I'm sad I didn't find this author sooner.
Plenty of thrill and mystery with the perfect amount of romance. I loved how tough and independent Kat was, which is the perfect heroine in my opinion.
The twist/conclusion to the mystery was fairly predictable though and I expected it but I still thought it was well executed.
I'm definitely looking forward to reading The Surgeon and it's sequels. Hopefully that series has as good of a heroine as Kat.

I had forgotten how easy this author was to read. And it was just what I felt like, so I found two others of hers and will read them soon!
