Nuclear war and general politics hits too close to home

This book took entirely too long to get started and I felt the characters were relatively flat. It was middle of the road at best. I liked some of his past works but have not been that impressed with the last couple of novels.

Wow! A Spectacular 5-Stars for Never. This historical, political, fictional thriller is exactly what I hoped to experience with Ken Follett, a master of storytelling and series writing. In the beginning, there were moments where the book felt a little slow. However, it was entertaining, and I wondered how it would all come together. I was filled with various emotions; curiosity, sadness, joy, heartache, disgust, and empathy when all the characters and situations finally intertwined. The character development was excellent, and the story itself had me on the edge of my seat. Without spoiling anything, the 'human behaviour' made me disgusted and incredibly sad, almost to the point of tears. The scenes are relevant and accurate to the risk and danger of today's world politics, and I couldn't help but think this would be a book that young adults worldwide should read. A book like this opens our minds to the risks of political and world powers. Never may be able to change young people's paradigm, helping them understand how ego, belief systems, and agenda drive political decisions. This book reminded me of how our politicians make life-changing decisions that drastically impact the global community and humanity. I highly recommend it for young adults and older.

This was the first book I read by Ken Follett and likely the last. The characters were cringeworthy - poor use of romance and most were poorly developed. The author clearly lacks any technical knowledge of the technologies or even politics at the center of the book, and the exposition is rather poor and artificial. The only positive thing I can say is that if you don’t pay attention to any of the details and flaws, it does show how the path to nuclear war is paved with good intentions.

Wanted to like this more but...
The topic was timely.
The various threads were individually fascinating and I really wanted to learn how it would be resolved. Which was why I put up with his pathetic portrayal of characters, particularly women, which was over simplistic and grating. Strong women do not always have stupid superiors. Strong women do not always waste time on romantic fantasies in the midst of tense moments.
Just putting women in positions of authority and power isn't being inclusive .adding interracial relationships isn't tolerance. It's all performative, trifling, and annoying.

Outside of the few book convenient things like all the spy’s not making critical mistakes, missions always being executed etc - this was a fantastic read. It’s a political thriller with an apocalyptic flavor to it. I found all the different story lines engaging and genuinely couldn’t put it down. I wasn’t sure how we were going to end it but thought it was the most fitting ending. Really recommend for fans of action, politics, international relations, and doomsday books.
