Got this one at the Festival of Books. :) Really, I only picked it up because we’d read Ishiguro’s When We Were Orphans in Prof. Geng’s class, and I’d enjoyed that one lots. The back summary of this book doesn’t fascinate that much.
As far as the plotline of the story goes, it’s honestly pretty dull. A butler goes driving through the English countryside. Thrilling! Especially the part where he runs out of gas. Petrol, pardon me. But it’s not the plotline that makes this book as good as it is, it’s the main character, his subtleties, disavowed imperfections, subconscious self-deception, and language. Especially the language. Every word is so expertly and carefully crafted to draw out so much depth from the narrator.
This – the language – is what makes this book. Though Orphans was much more interesting because of its mystery and plot, Remains of the Day works because it is just as layered and composed as Orphans. Truly, I don’t know how Ishiguro manages to convey so much personality and irony in every word. It makes me very jealous but emphasizes just how much work it takes to write, and how much easier it is to read.
Wonderful writing, but I don’t know if I could read it again. It’s a bit too slow.
