I was actually kind of disappointed with this book... I thought this was going to be a huge Annabeth book where we really got to see her powers on display--but not really? It's actually kinda largely forgettable. OR I wanted her to get messy and illogical for once because of Percy being gone? Or get taken over by ghosts and really do some damage as the leader? Nothing. Like it was a high stakes thing that didn't grip me like he usually does until... the spider's web! That was good. I think that because her powers aren't as visible (and the other character's are pretty creative problem solvers as well), she needed a bit more to highlight what makes her particularly special.

That said... the ENDING! This man should write a romance novel because I am so invested! As if they haven't been through enough?? Extra .25 stars. Almost added a full half star. lol

Not sure what to say. I half remembered (barely) some of the plot points. I guess because it's Percy Jackson I feel like there are no stakes since I'm confident everyone will make it out alive(ish). Was still entertaining. I enjoyed seeing them work together for once. Mr. B had a nice voice even though he was annoying.

3.5

It feels like this series is slowly getting worse... I know the fourth book is fantastic so I'm holding out for that but "The Mark of Athena" was subpar compared the the second book, and especially inadequate compared to the first book.

If you couldn’t tell, this is probably my least favorite book in this series. Now, it started out really great. I loved the merging of the two sides and the conflict that ensued, but after that... I just was not a big fan of the plot in this one. The middle of the book was quite slow and felt like a lot of fluff. The last ~quarter of the book, however, was very good. I loved following Annabeth and her quest, and I wish more of the book was dedicated to that. The ending of the book was actually the best part of the book in my opinion, but for me that doesn't make up for the boredom I felt for over half of it.

The characters were all good except for a certain someone. I don't know why more people don't feel this way, but I am not the biggest fan of Frank. I think he was unnecessarily rude to Leo throughout the book while Hazel was trying to work out her connection with Leo. In return, Leo was never rude or even showed much of an interest in Hazel romantically, Frank was just being a defensive jerk. His fear of Leo's powers is rational but the way he treated Leo is not. Other than that, there was interesting personal character and relationship character developments. I just was not into what Frank was doing in this book, I guess.

I don't think this was that strong of a book, and that seems to be a pretty unpopular opinion, but oh well. I know "House of Hades" improves greatly from this one.

The Mark of Athena (surprisingly) was a disappointment compared to the first two books in the Heroes series.

Annabeth is featured in this book as well as Percy, Leo, and Piper. This is the first book in the series -or ever- to have four narratives.

Percy is snarky as always and I love how Rick uses his voice for the text. In SoN, Ella has a prophecy that "the mark of athena burns through Rome" and "wisdom's daughter walks alone". This is major in this book.

There was a heck lot of stuff going on in Mark of Athena. We know that the characters have to get to the original Mount Olympus in Greece, but they're going to have to make a detour to Rome. I am totally psyched for House of Hades to come out real soon!

As the seven demigods cross the ocean to Europe they pass through the oceans and what the Romans call the "Mare Nostrum", allegedly a dangerous place especially for half-bloods.

There is some Leo and Hazel in this book, but think about Percy and don't mess with his ship. He likes Frazel; face it, he was totally waiting for them to get together in SoN. Anyways, I like Frazel, but there's something with Sammy Valdez in here and some Spanish dialogue. My Spanish speakers or class takers, feel free to enjoy some awards for knowing another language.

Annabeth has to face on of her worst fears and the journey is terribly hard for her, because as mentioned, she is travelling alone.

For those who haven't read the book yet, I hope you don't get tripped up in the end like I did. Uncle Rick is a troll.
