So far, this one is my favorite out of this series alone. It’s an epic tale of bravery, friendship, and the struggle for unity. This story follows the seven demigods of the Prophecy of Seven as they embark on a dangerous journey to prevent war and fulfill their destiny.
The biggest standout feature of this book is that it’s centered around Annabeth Chase. Going into this series, I was expecting much more Jason main character energy. I’m definitely not complaining about this change. Longtime fans of Riordan’s work will love to see Annabeth go on a solo quest that will keep them on their toes. Her journey to follow the Mark of Athena is so impactful to this overall narrative. We really get to see her identity come to life.
But what truly sets this book apart for me is Leo Valdez. He poured his heart and soul into the Argo II, controlled simply by a Wii remote. Leo provides some much-needed comic relief. There’s so much more to him than just his jokes and banter, though. He’s insecure and feels like an outsider, and I couldn’t stop rooting for him. Watching Leo rise to the occasion time and time again made me feel like a proud mom. He’s brilliant, and his inventions help make every scene he’s in unpredictable.
Each character brings something unique to the table. You can feel the tension between the Greek and Roman demigods, and the gods in general. All the friendships, relationships, and even the enemy dynamics feel so real.
This book started off slow, but once the action sped up, so did the story. I love how beautifully these books bleed into the next one, and I’m looking forward to what’s next.
