I was impressed by learning about brown showers in detail.

Eh. Could have gone without reading this and been the same as having read it. It was interesting enough that I felt compelled to see it through to the end, but I should have stopped after the blatent, completely pointless racism like 28 pages in. Was really more a story about addiction with a bunch of kink-shaming thrown in.

I will have to think more about what it was that I didnt like about this book. Perhaps that initially I felt there was little reflection into her actions and later it seemed a lot more judgemental of her actions. Perhaps I was hoping for something that fell more inbetween.

Febos’ memoir about working as a dominatrix and getting sober had moments of being completely overwhelming to my nervous system - I had to stop to take a few breaths as she described the mechanics of a brown shower, for example. As I sit with the book as a whole, I understand the more critical reviews while also feeling stunned by the intimacy of her writing. It was certainly unforgettable.
