One of the best all-around short story collections I’ve read. All have something interesting to contemplate and are crafted so well.
Started to lose steam toward the end
I was definitely more impressed with some of the stories than others, but it was a strong collection overall.

This is my first short story collection. I chose this one because Story of Your Life is the inspiration for my favorite movie, Arrival. I thought that story was great. I appreciated the detail about learning the alien language, though I understand why the movie didn't get that technical. Ultimately the movie made a few choices I preferred over the story, and I was happy I saw the movie first.
The rest of the stories were fun; I enjoyed at least some aspect of every story, and thoroughly enjoyed several of them. I like that short stories drop you immediately into the action with mostly-finished characters, but still manage surprise endings, and the whole thing doesn't feel half-baked. The themes of technology and religion made for thought-provoking stories. I did find most of the stories on their own to be a little unsatisfying, and felt a little detached trying to evaluate them all as a collection.
