Absolutely fantastic!

After reading ACOTAR (for the second time) I started actively reading through my TBR looking for a tale that would absorb me in the same way. The Plated Prisoner series came close but this one blew me away.

Fair warning: this is not a tale for the feint of heart. It is dark and challenging to read but Carissa Broadbent has done a superb job of bringing this world to life in a way that is still emotionally relevant even when dealing with all the death, loss and violence. After all, this is a vampire fantasy tale stripped back to its bloody roots unlike some modern retellings which have glossed over the gore.

As for spice, the enemies-to-lovers trope is in full force with the romantic spice being present but not overwhelming. In the best tradition of great storytelling, the spice is a part of the story as opposed to being the point as with many authors in the romantasy genre. The relationship between Oray and Raihn is also very well handled and there are some twists along the way leaving you to wonder what happens next.

I loved this book and can’t wait to read the next instalment!

I loved this book, I simply couldn't put it down.
Oraya emotional journey was so raw and relatable, I'm so heartbroken for her!

I hated the ending tough! Wtf!
I mean, why the fuck did they get married? He lied to her, made her feel safe, just to abuse her confidence like that!
I really need a serious relentless + brutal revenge arc in the next book!

Plus: I need to know more about Vincent, whose story we learn almost nothing about. To me he was the most interesting character, I loved the mystery that surrounded him.
I request a prequel about Vincents life, pretty please 🙏

I absolutely loved this book!!
I think this could be the first fantasy book where I actually liked pretty much majority of the characters!

It’s definitely a fantasy book in every sense of the word. Vampires, Humans, Magic. The story kept you intrigued and it kept you wanting more. I don’t know how many nights I ended up staying awake because I didn’t want to put it down!

I loved Mische, Oraya, Raihn, Vincent etc.
I’m excited to read book 2!

Good old fashioned vampire Hugh fantasy with a side of unhinged FMC that really worked for me.
If you enjoy fantasy plot lines about female characters growing up thinking they have to be the perfect weapon to be taken seriously, you will enjoy this book. Definite Jude vibes (FotA series).
