Spicy - two scenes not the entire book.
Twisted, dark, cruel relationships. Lots of blood and violence. Vampire society with dueling groups.
Enemies to lovers. Self acceptance.

The first half or so dragged a bit but oh BOY did the end reveals get me excited! I’m interested to see how the next book plays out. I think I’ll like it more than this one. I’ve had my fair share of deadly trial storylines and this one was pretty well done but I look forward to the aftermath more.

Book was better than I expected, well paced and an overall good read. Would definitely recommend checking the content warnings before reading though

It took me a while to get into this book. I felt like the beginning was super overwritten and excessive. I also felt as though the author expected us to be invested in certain characters early without putting in the work to create that investment. This being said, as I continued reading and got to know the characters more, it became easier to buy in.

Being structured around the trials meant that the novel kept a good pace and tension remained. Overall, a good read and I am excited to pick up the next one.

Carissa just doesn't miss. This is a new world from her War of Lost Hearts Trilogy. I knew I could trust her even in this new world. This book was so good and I absolutely did NOT see the twist even coming. I cannot wait to start book two.

Well…damn. Despite this not quite being a five star review for me, this book definitely left me with a book hangover. The third act was phenomenal, but I dropped half a star because there were definitely parts of the book that kind of dragged for me, especially in the first half. I also sometimes had trouble remembering all the different factions and terms, so there were times when I struggled to remember who was who. (I didn’t realize until the end of the book that there’s a glossary at the end! Maybe this is more obvious in the print version, but I totally overlooked this in the kindle version.) I’m looking forward to the next one, and I can see why there’s so much hype surrounding this book.

Safety Stats:
Ages:
Oraya is 24 and human, Raihn was 32 when turned but has been immortal for hundreds of years.
Cheating:
None.
Other OM/OW:
None in present timeline. There are some mentions of two past love interests of Raihn. He was married as a human and had a child. He also fell in love as a vampire once before, but he is not pining for her now. There are also mentions of Oraya’s first love. He was a vampire who lost control during sex with her, and Oraya killed him. She is not pining for him now.
Separation:
I would say none. The heroine and hero aren’t really a couple for most of this book since it’s a slow burn.
Triggers:
Past rape of heroine (not by hero), descriptive violence/gore, past self-harm of heroine, some references to enslavement.
HEA/HFN?:
Cliffhanger. First book in a series.

Dark, twisty, stabby, rage-filled, and thrilling.  This vampire novel satisfyingly delivers on pretty much everything you could ask for out of the romantasy genre.  There's a rare and coveted blend of balanced fantasy and romance here.  While the world-building was intriguing enough to stand on its own, it left plenty to be desired in the upcoming books and never once overwhelmed the slow-burn moments of romance.  Entertainment value was through the roof, considering this book managed to carry me through a sizable reading slump without losing my attention.  Prepare for plot-twists galore in that last bit of it!  FMC had tons of aura and is a badass all around.  Lots of F-yous to the power structure and y'all know I'm here for that.  Plus, the way Broadbent handled Oraya's trauma was sensitive and respectful.  It impacted who the character became, and she made decisions in a consistent and believable way.  Although there is much in the story to provide shock-factor, Oraya's trauma was never one of them, and that was refreshing.  Can't wait for the next one.
