This is one of those books that I bought to my collection without any expectation of when I would read it. It could've taken years for that to happen.

Fortunately, it wasn't the case here. In one of my explorations through the book shelves I decided to pick this one and I'm very glad I did.

First, I love the cover. This is how a cover should be done. It immediately catches everyone's attention. I love the illusion of depth.

I love the art. Very cute, very well done.

About the story, the first few pages will probably tell you if you'll like it or not. The story may look cute but it is not. There is very little cuteness about it. It's actually very dark and it will break your heart multiple times.

That said, it is also very original and I enjoyed it a lot. Very glad I bought this.

This book was a journey to say the least, the sugary sweet sharply cut with the real and disturbing is an experience I won’t forget

This is disturbing and turned my stomach, but it also is masterful in its blending of the twee and the grotesque in the way of a Disney/Angela Carter mashup. Great art. Lingering questions. Things you can’t unsee.

"Beautiful Darkness" has great illustrations and a storyline that juxtaposes cute fairy-like characters with that of the dead girl they climbed out of, as well as their cold indifference to violence, death, and their treatment of others. They seem like a nice, cooperative community on the outside, but when you get down to it, you really see the selfishness and apathy of these individuals. Overall, I found the allegory a little difficult to understand and make sense of sometimes, and struggled with pinning down a meaning or moral of the story. However, that's the point of it: it makes you think, reflect and realize that there is no one "right" answer to life. My best guess at the meaning of it all though? Life, though it might seem bright and joyful on the outside, is actually much more sinister. It is filled with terrible people that will chew up and spit right back out those who are "different" or "too nice," and to survive, these people must learn the rules and expectations of this game of life.
