True to the title, this book was beautifully illustrated and terribly dark. A Roald Dahl-esque story without the training wheels. A quick little read that will leave me haunted for quite a while.

The idea of the story is cool, but it leads to nothing but discomfort. It lacks a real plot. The characters lack depth and the brutality depicted is imaginatively disturbing, which is intentional, but has too few consequences overall.
I like the strange mixture of childish fairy tales and pithy images, the naive characters and their cruel actions. But it doesn't work as a story. There is too little background and emotion for that.
