I'm still taking in everything I read. I was born in El Salvador, but the majority of my memories are in US. Seeing El Salvador through his father's eyes, his grandmother's eyes and his eyes was lovely, tragic, powerful and everything in between. This book is close to my heart and soul.

i cried a lot reading this, reflecting on my own immigrant parents and my relationships with them. i also cried for the people that Lovato writes about, grieving for those that have died. the way that Lovato writes is very honest and the diction he uses makes it feel as if he's casually talking to you about the most gruesome parts of central American history, atrocities that continue to happen now. i took off 0.25 because i don't know how i feel about the mix and match timelines he writes on, it's cool but confusing at times.

Although its the first book I finish this year I cant help but cry from the emotion and solidarity I feel as a Salvadoreña media muerta. Along with Lovato and the rest of the Salvadoran diaspora.

I really liked the approach to this story. I feel like the personal blends so well with the step back and look at the world events. Anyway, it was a really good balance and really good read on events that have led to so much trauma in our community.

A very engaging read about a man’s personal journey to uncover his family’s past and reconnect with his Salvadoran heritage while working to create a history for himself and future Salvadoran youth.
